An anti twist wire rope carries the full pulling load of a stringing job, so a defect that passes unnoticed can snap mid-pull and endanger the crew. A structured pre-job inspection of anti twist wire rope before overhead transmission line stringing is the cheapest insurance on site. This guide lists what to check and the real ratings to compare against.
Anti-twist ropes are braided so the pulling load cannot spin the conductor or the pilot line. That same braided construction means external wear and internal strand breaks are both possible, and internal damage is invisible without a careful look. Because the rope is reused across projects, its condition degrades with every pull.
Two Galaxy anti-twist ropes show the parameters an inspector should have on the tag:
| Parameter | 18 mm pilot rope | 15 mm pulling rope |
|---|---|---|
| Breaking load | 200 kN | 158 kN |
| Nominal diameter | 18 mm | 15 mm |
| Strands number | 12 | 12 |
| Reel diameter | 1400 mm | 1250 mm |
| Weight | 1154 kg | 886 kg |
| Application | Transmission overhead power lines | Transmission overhead power lines |
If a measured diameter or a corroded section suggests the breaking load has fallen below the figure on the tag, the rope should be withdrawn rather than risked.
Much rope damage happens off the tower. A rope left on damp ground corrodes, a reel dropped from a truck bends, and a rope dragged over concrete abrades its outer strands. Between jobs, anti-twist rope should be stored on its reel, off the ground, in a dry place, and handled so the reel is never allowed to fall or roll uncontrolled. Recording each rope's history — the pulls it has completed and the tensions it has seen — lets an inspector judge whether its remaining capacity still suits the next job.
New ropes can be specified directly against the job: the 200 kN 18 mm galvanised pilot rope and the 158 kN 15 mm anti-twisting pulling rope are both drawn from the Anti Twist Rope range.
Before every stringing campaign and after any pull that exceeded normal tension. Ropes in storage should be re-checked before reuse.
It should not be used for a full-tension pull. Broken strands concentrate load and the rope's true capacity is no longer known.
Yes. An undersized or damaged reel kinks the rope and weakens it, so reel diameter is part of the inspection.
Send us your maximum pulling tension, span lengths and required rope length, and we will recommend an anti-twist rope diameter and breaking load with the correct reel.
